Great Australian Rally 2006

The seventh RACV Great Australian Rally hits the road on Sunday 22 January 2006 and promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

The event is held annually to raise money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and is sponsored by RACV. The organisers are hoping to raise up to $40,000 from the 2006 rally.

"This event really is a fun day for the whole family. As well as providing a great opportunity to view 1,000 veteran, vintage and classic vehicles, there will be food stalls, music and children’s entertainment. A feature will be an expo of 100 period pedal cars," said Brian Kelly, RACV Motoring Associations Manager.

The line-up for the 2006 Rally includes a number of the motoring industry’s finest period vehicles:

  • 1924-30/98 Vauxhall Tourer. Present day Holden vehicles can trace their lineage to this fine vehicle as General Motors acquired Vauxhall Motors in 1925.
  • 1936 Riley Kestel sports saloon with a 4 speed pre-selector gearbox, popular with racing cars for that period.
  • 1936 Mercedes Benz 540K straight 8 Cabriolet C, the only one of its type in Australia .
  • 1931 Bentley 6 cylinder sports saloon, one of the final 50 produced by Warren Owen Bentley before being taken over by Rolls Royce in 1932.

Mr Kelly said there would be four starting points: Federation Square ; Casey City Civic Centre; Brandon Park Shopping Centre, Mulgrave and Western Port Marina, Hastings.

"All vehicles depart from the staring points at around 9 am and proceed to Mornington via Hastings . The vehicles will be on display at Mornington Racecourse from 10 am to 4 pm ," he said.

Prizes will be awarded for display vehicles, pedal cars and period costumes. The entry fee is $15 for adults, $40 for a family, $10 for a concession and children under 14 are free.

RACV Great Australian Rally 2006 (from Uniquecarsandparts.com.au) "A fantastic day was had attending the Victorian RACV "Great Australian Rally" held on Sunday the 22nd January at the Mornington Race Track. Oppressive conditions (with the mercury climbing past 40C) were not enough to deter many devoted Classic Car fans, impressive considering very few were blessed with air-conditioning. Naturally enough the shady spots around the grounds were snapped up rather quickly. We would like to thank the many car owners that we spoke to on the day, and hope to provide more detailed information on some of the truly "Unique" cars we spotted that day."
