Great Australian Rally 2008

About 700 veteran, vintage and classic cars have made their way from Melbourne to Mornington in a bid to raise money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

The 11th Great Australian Rally hopes to raise more than $50,000 for the centre, including its Claire Oliver Melanoma Fund.

The cars left Docklands, Rowville and Hastings before going on display to the public at the Mornington racecourse at 11:00am AEDT.

Organiser Colin Brown says the earliest car on show dates back to 1896.

"We've got the old Vilo, one of only four remaining in Australia, in the world actually," he said.

"We have a beautiful 540k Mercedes which was used by the German army during the war, which is a very rare car; we have just so many cars, some magnificent muscle cars from America."

RACV Great Australian Rally 2008 (from Uniquecarsandparts.com.au) "We were pleased with the number of vehicles on display, many car clubs having a solid representation. We were particularly impressed with the Bristol's on display, as well as the immaculate Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, Nash Metropolitan and several Mini's. We really appreciate the information passed on by many of the owners, but all that talking meant we only managed 60 odd photo's. We will try and get there earlier next year - if you are considering attending next years event we suggest you do too."
